I did something similar and pulled out a book I had meant to read a long time ago that was very highly recommended by many people — Project Hail Mary. Hoo boy it is bad. It’s the kind of bad that makes me think I’m going insane because so many people loved it.

The main character wakes up with no memory in a strange place so the first thing he does is create an experiment to determine how strong the gravity is (??). Memories come back to him in convenient flashback chapters that fill in the blanks. It reads like it was written by a high school student.

It’s a book for people who use science as a verb. Not for me.

I had a similar thing with several books these last couple of weeks. I wish I had a better way of finding books that I would actually like, because buying the ones other people say are good is a dead end.
